The Little T-Rex

Here’s a little story, hope it’s not too complex

Once upon a time there was a little T-Rex

He was wandering through the forest and guess what happened next?

All the trees looked the same and that made him perplexed.

He’d never wandered out that far alone

He was worried he’d never find his way back home

This was years before they invented to phone!

He tried to retrace his steps and continued to roam.

Deep in the forest it was quite dark and scary

He was very brave but he was still wary

He knew that being scared didn’t mean he was weak

Then in the distance, he heard a loud creek!

Followed by a screech! Followed by a squawk!

He was so frightened, he couldn’t even talk!

He wondered if his family would ever find him

and now another dinosaur was right behind him!

He picked up his pace and he started to run

When a loud voice called out “Come back, son!”

He felt lots of emotions: scared, shocked, sad

Then he turned around and he saw his dad!

Now he felt relieved, comforted, surprised,

and he ran to his daddy with tears in his eyes.

His dad said “Always let me know where you are!

Stay close to me and don’t stray far!

We have tiny arms so it’s hard to hold hands

but we need to stick together! I hope you understand!”

Little Rex listened and he said he understood

Then he and his dad stomped back through the wood

Back through the mud, back through the rubble

Stepping over logs and jumping through puddles

It had been a long day and he’d had lots of struggles

That left him confused and bemused and befuddled

He was relieved that he wasn’t in trouble

and was glad to get home and have lots of cuddles.

Author’s Note:

I wrote this poem for my friend’s son when he was six years old. He asked me to write him a story about a little T-Rex that gets lost in the forest.
